The region surrounding Denali has long been inhabited by Alaska Native peoples including the Koyukon Athabascan People, who named the mountain Denali, meaning “The High One.”

Denali was originally protected as Mount McKinley National Park in 1917 to safeguard wildlife populations, particularly Dall sheep. In 1980 the park expanded significantly and was renamed Denali National Park and Preserve.
